About Erith Town Centre
Council: Bexley
Phone Code: 01322
Postcode Area: DA8, DA18 County: Greater London
Erith town centre fronts the River Thames in southeast London. At one time, it was the site of one of Henry VIII's naval dockyards; the town's most significant period of development was during the 1960's and 1970's.
The heart of the town centre dates from the late 1960's and is sited around a pedestrianised town square flanked by shops and small businesses.
Over the last 5 years Erith town has attracted many developments with new retailing, housing and recreational attractions now on offer. In 1999 Morrison's supermarket opened on the fringe of the town centre and was an instant success, drawing people in from as far away as Maidstone to shop in Erith.
New housing developments off West Street and James Watt Way are bringing more people to the locality. The opening of the pier and riverside walks are offering Erith's shoppers a distinctive experience. An active theatre group, a cybercentre in the elegant old library, a new athletics track and a brand new clinic add to the mix of amenities. The Crossrail study team is considering whether Erith should be linked by an upgraded rail network to Ebbsfleet International Station. The excitement is certainly not over yet!
